Moderators need to approve enrolement of New members..
Sometimes I see some perculiar IDs ..
vettipeela .. jilujilu...
We do not approve such IDs ..
I request you to project that OUR GROUP, discussing more of Literature and History - is comprised of:
WRITERS OF NATIONAL REPUTE; Scholars of International Repute.. Some Administrative & Police Officials and Media Pesoanlties (like NDTV Vaidhyanathan / Imayam TKV Rajan & all)
Also we do not entertain Business Promotion mails..
Dear SPS, yahoo groups have lot of spamming, not just our group but several others i have part of. These are not necessarily 'member emails' spam mostly ids that somehow bypass approval, have to go in and delete them.
I have been a yahoo group administrator myself and it has happened more than once.
-Hi i have noticed a very funny thing in enrollments.
as a moderator i get emails requesting to join, an announcement when they have joined and also if somebody drops out.
of recent all three types of these mails i have got regarding the same person. its happened more than once. i guess new members did not click the " no e mails " category. with our mails touching nearly a hundred on some days ianybody would be stunned.
i guess all moderators need to put their heads together and convert all members to " no emails " category.members could browse the group at their own convenience.
SPS, I am confused. I don't have moderator privilege and I can't approve any new member requests. And also I don't allow people to register at the site, recently I got two queries and I asked them to join the groups and then I manually create them if they post new messages, I haven't automate that part yet.
Many might not know of such options and they might not know that we can read the mails in teh group site itself. If you turn off the email option without their knowledge, they will also be stunned if there are no mails in the inbox and might leave the group thinking there is no activity..... :)
And, the mails touched 300 even this week.... we set our own records and break it.. :)
Yes, we can. But I don't think those people who visits our archive site would spam us, of course they may think otherwise and want to target our members, but I would say it will be very rare.
Yahoo is famous for Spammers, from my understanding, spammers just join the group to get list of member ids. It is very easy right, just get the member ids from post, append @yahoo.com, you all set, from our group they will at least 600+ emails (not 1440+, because only 600+ people would have posted at least one message) and they will send spam. Google groups doesn't do that.
And yahoo's spam detection is not that good compared others (esp. google)., I get tons of spam in yahoo inbox where as I get tons of spam in google, but those don't come to my inbox. But if people are BYPASSING the join process and can spam us, that is SCARY. Spammers are getting very intelligent and breaking all form of security, recently they broke google/yahoo captcha !
Yahoo groups trying new changes in their beta http://new.groups.yahoo.com/yg_beta_forum I will try to find some information on spam and see whether we can avoid them.
Hi Sri it was just that new members were dropping out on same days they enrolled. of course we remind them in the front page itself that the group can be atrociously active on some days. the pleasant thing is we are very active on weekends now too.
This can be done by all moderators in the members sections of our group.
It is good to note that while in many groups the moderators need to force the members to receive mails who have opted for No-Emails, we are discussing how not to overwhelm the members.
However, there many situations where a yahoo group member may not use the web interface to read or reply to the messages, for example due to corporate policy restrictions, or due to offline availability, lack of search capability compared to an email client, etc. In such cases, the some members would miss the messages. So I feel it would be better if we leave the default option as is and let the members set choose it according to their own preference.
