My view on that article is you have to preserve your heritage and its not like there is paucity of space in madras to build a secretariat....We had a similar problem 5-6 years ago when they wanted to demolish the police HQ and build a new one and that was defered because of popular outcry....
I think we need to preserve the heritage at the same time progress...georgetown doent resemble anything it was 50 years ago....
We need to preserve old buildings and monuments as heritage....I am from Madras Medical College eshtablished in 1835....it is proud of so many discoveries in GGH...The first ever female medical graduate in the world graduated from MMC...
The wards and buildings are of the RAJ period yes they are old but it could have been preserved as a medical museum than demolish the whole thing to put up a new building....
I am sorry to say this but we dont respect our heritage....meaning the government and administraters...
Imagine a medical museum which houses the works like Ronald Ross and Leishman and Donovan....
But everything in our place is now politically motivated....the first VC to offere to change the name of the college was the Medical University atleast Madras University and Madras Vetinary College stood fast and refused to change and MMC was CMC for a brief period and then then all those............realised their foley and changed it to MMC
If I were an administrater I would declare the Central Station, egmore station ripon building southere rly office....mylapore temple tiruvanmiyur temple all as state heritage and preserve them...
If you went to any western town or even village a part is called historic town...for instance if you take Tanjore the area of Big temple, palace, saraswathi mahal all will be historic town all those small santhu pondhu streets will be historic part.....same with madhurai
But Is there anyone to do it in our place....The only consolation was Mammallapuram
Anyway enough of me boring you
Bye

I saw this article in Hindu. It is about a Center for Historical Studies in Britain. They seem to have very good collection of books on Indian History. They are planning to expand and they face the same problem as most of the Historic research centers - Lack of funds. It seems Indian Govt. and Indian big shots living in Britain are not interested in supporting for their cause. Depressing.
Maybe our group members living there can visit this place and get an idea of what they do.
