Stress no more Wednesday February 28 2007 16:29 IST Dr W Selvamurthy and Deepa Prakash Just balancing our lives with the changing world around us can be stressful. And uncontrolled stress often leaves people at risk for many health disorders, including depression. The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that depression is a leading cause of disability as measured by YLDs (Years Lived with Disability).
The WHO defines depression as a ``mental disorder, which includes symptoms like loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-esteem, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy or poor concentration.'' Undoubtedly the condition reduces work performance, efficiency and the ability to be happy.
It's all in our head!
Depression is classified into two types: reactive depression is a response to life events; and endogenous depression which has biological causes.
