sps: i wish to add: i had the opportunity of examining the linga of the temple during the last kumbhabhishekam when the interior of the garbhagriha was repaired. to me the avudaiyar seems to be of single stone as elsewhere. but my observation shows that there is a crack along the upper flat prtion, which was mended. it is like that the audaiyar has sunken due its own weight and the crack developed.we may wait for another chance. sriraman > ================================================ > Dear Venkat, > > There are more to this : > > 1. venkat sorry no. but i had the opportunity of listening to KR Srinivasan, perhaps the best teacher i ever had,on this subject. he was the first asi person to systematic conservation of the temple after it was handed over to asi by the heriditary trustee (HT). he mentioned, i remeber that the foundation is deep enogh to touch the hard bed rock - the laterite formation. The exposed portion of this formation could be seen along the moat and below the Sivaganga fortification. By a simple observation, the level of this formation is atleast 5m below the level of the temple. The laterite formations are always flat. Therefore, the foundation must about 5m. hope some body will check and record it.
