Last weekend when we (Myself, Ram, Lavanya, Dr.Kalaikkovan and Dr.Nalini) went to Thanjavur, we visited the museum near Saraswathi mahal library.
There we saw a male sculpture in sitting posture. There was Sangu and Chakra rekhai in his palms. Only the Chakra rekhai is clearly visible on the right hand. The palm having Sangu rekhai in left hand is hidden under the right hand. The hair style was slightly different and there is no magudam.
Today i forgot to bring the photo. We will upload it tomorrow in our photos section.
Does the statue have a name board saying its Rajaraja?
Do we have inscriptional evidences saying Rajaraja had sangu chakra regai? Even if there is one, how can we say that the lines in the statues hands are regais..it can be damages happened during the course of time.
It can be an ordinary man in sitting posture, just like the man praying in the tanjai temple painting.. :) Do we have evidences saying that the statue is of Rajaraja?
varalaaru team, ellam unga kitta kathundathuthan...hehe..
where was the mention of the sangu and sakkaram first. copper plates? does it have any vaishnavite significance( irunthaal aalvaarkadiyaan santhoshap paduvaan) can somebody throw some light on this
Is it Rajaraja? Can u post the pic? I know, many here are experts...... But a little doupt - in my view most of the old kings pics (ok from a dynasty) looks so simillar......
In Madhan's writings, he told Raja Raja's statue was in a museum in North India.....
Dear all thoseof you who want to download the picture in full resolution please do so I will have to delete the Full Res Image by Sunday ....Space problems
-Buddha was the enlightened one and nature gave him many marks called lakshanas.
The term lakshanas refers to an auspicious sign or sacred mark. These are specific physical characteristics and marks or signs on the body. Lakshana are pariticularly associated with the Buddha, and there are considered to be 32 greater and 80 lesser bodily marks or features on the Buddha's body.
The most ubiquitious lakshanas associated with the Buddha are:
Urna: a mark or whorl of hair on the forehead or between the eyebrows.
Usnisha: a top knot, or cranial protuberance, which is considered to be a sign of his Awakening or Enlightenment.
Elongated earlobes: these are an indication of the Buddha's existence as a human prince before his renunciation and subseuqent attainment of enlightenment.
Other signs and marks of the Buddha include his gold-colored skin ,-- wide shoulders, narrow hips and long arms that reach down to his knees.
+++++++++++++++++++ His fingers and toes may be webbed, and cakras (wheels -- specifically, the Wheel of Law) and other auspicious markings may be seen on the palms of his hands and the soles of his upturned feet. ++++++++++++++++++
I think rrc statue has top knot , elongated lobes and chakra too I think we have to rethink
It must be Buddha. And its not rekai and more over its not sanku. It can be called chakaram atleast, but still not rekai. marudhani desing madhiri irukku.
Kamal, Ram, Thanjavur paintings show a majestic male and you tell that that figure do not have any Royal look or attaire and reject accepting it as RRC. How can you consider this statue to be of a king? This is not majestic. Do not have any royal attire. I didnt expect this from you guys. :) If you are serious, then you are contradicting yourself, if you are making fun...thats ok.
the more I think of it the more puzzled i am it was such an anti climax after the build up its so obviously a buddhist statue. how could seasoned historians like kamal make a mistake was my first impression. then I thought perhaps it was a joke. and its not even april. I still hope kamal can turn the table and come up with an explanation on why he thought it was a rrc statue.
ippothaan unga ponnu ungkalai group pakkam vittaalaa??? buddha statues are known to have chakra designs or fingers rolled up like a wheel. it has a lot of significance for them. and one more thing buddha is supposed to have lotus design on his feet. if a picture of him like that comes I hope people dont claim that he's vanathi.
