Thank you Vijay Kumar for posting this brief note about Magellan's Voyage. I enjoyed reading it and learned some new things too. I recently travelled to Portugal and saw Vasco da Gama's tomb in St.Jeronimos Monastery.
Vasco da Gama, as many of you may know, was the great explorer who discovered the sea route to India via Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, in 1498. He landed in Calicut in Kerala. Later the Portuguese colonised parts of India including Goa and Sri Lanka.
More information about his voyage can be found at the following link:
This church was built from the proceeds of the spices brought from India by Vasco da Gama.
Continuing on the theme of the Crusaders, the Portuguese were responsible demolishing almost all the ancient Hindu Temples in SriLanka including Thiruketheeswaram, Thirukoneswaram and Muneeswaram. They obliterated many Buddhist shrines too and committed many other atrocities. The last king of Jaffna, Sangilian, was executed by them in Goa. They heralded the start of the subjugation of Tamils in SrilLanka!
I had to take revenge. So, I went and desecrated their 'Monument to the Discoveries' !!
Apologies for sending an email on asubject not related to PS, but as you all are interested in history this may be OK!
GOLD, GLORY, GOD....in that light you could even brand RRC and RJC as crusaders.... devot shivaite, conquerers, plunderers ( they did bring back enormous wealth)... possibly got too over confident or lazy..turning the tables on us.
But at times, when i think about it, i do want to give it to the british - coming from a small island nation, with not much natural resources ( comeon - for 4 months you are fighting bitter colds)- for their indomitable spirit.
its truly winds of change ...as said by the jewelers of europe - during the 17thC - they were designing jewels for the Czars and european monarchs, 18C they were doing for indian rajahs, 19th C british queens, 20th C - American stars n mid east seikhs, 21st c - chinese moguls..... . > > Continuing on the theme of the Crusaders, the Portuguese were responsible demolishing almost all the ancient Hindu Temples in SriLanka including Thiruketheeswaram, Thirukoneswaram and Muneeswaram. the portugese also initiated the transfer of kapali temple from the sea shore. the portugese actually brought buddha's tooth to goa in 1560 and crushed it in public.
when india took over goa the portugese appealed to the pope to help them in the war of the christians against the unbeleivers. the pope refused and even went on with his scheduled trip to india that year
