Vikatan’s Ponniyin Selvan Book

Vikatan’s version of Kalki’s “Magnum Opus” Ponniyin Selvan with Paintings from first Oringal Version by Mr. Maniam. We have to thank Vikatan for doing this. If you look at the images, they have printed the paintings in the center page and wherever it was in the orignal version.
It is definitely a collectors edition. It is available @ 35th Chennai Book fair for Rs. 1200/-. They do accept credit cards.
Other publishers and books stalls @ the book fair also have their own versions

Ponniyin Selvan @ 35th Chennai Book Fair, all publishers and book sellers has them on display and selling it like hot cakes. They are all over the place from cheaper versions to Vikatan’s with Original Mr. Maniam paintings. Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan is still in hearts of people (after 50 years!) and will be there for few decades to come.
Please visit the Book Fair, support the publishers, it is definitely worth the time.

Google Currents is a Flipboard like app that lets you read blogs, news websites and other online publications in a magazine format on your mobile phone and tablet devices. The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms.
One big advantage with Google Currents is that you can read your subscriptions offline and it will even download the embedded images for offline access.
You can get Google Currents now from the Android Market and the iTunes Store. This is currently available only for US users.
I have created an editon for Ponniyin Selvan which can be subscribed by searching for “Ponniyin Selvan” and added to your subscription list. It will sync and download the content for reading, it can be read even if you are not online.

Good news for the Ponniyin Selvan novel lovers who wants to read the novel along with the original pictures of Mainam Selvan. Vikatan will be publishing the book with hard binding and will be releasing it on Jan 2012.

Vikatan’s Ponniyin Selvan from Book Fair
The actual cost is Rs. 1354, but if you reserve now, the introductory price will be only Rs.999.
One of our members Mr. Venkateswaran confirmed the following details
- Every chapter has paintings
- Paper – same as they use in other books. So it is not art quality paper. Just news print quality paper.
- We can send Rs. 500/- or Rs. 999/- now. Book will be released in 1 week of January. Chennai residents can go to their office and pick up their copy after the book is released.
And Thiru Maniam’s Grand daughter also confirmed the antiquity
Definitely I know that all the illustrations are being published as it came in the very first time in Kalki magazine by artist maniam in 1950′s.
It will also have an antique feel that is unique to the book.

Ponniyin Selvan – Social Network – Beta

This is long due, usually I try to change the site at least every year, it happened in 2008, 2009 and this time it took one more year 2011!.
The idea came to my mind when our group members started discussing sculpture (poetry in stone), ponniyin selvan also in facebook and thought is there anyway we can provide that kind of site for ourselves where we will own the content and we can create article out of it easily which is bit cumbersome if the content is hosted @ facebook.com . Discussed internally with Vijay, Venkat and few others and found it might be worth a try.
We also have discussed moving away from Yahoo Groups few times earlier for various reasons but not much of response from the members. Sometimes we need to show how it would look and options to lure them in.
So the site is in beta now, lot of work needs to be done and few bugs to be fixed before making this site live. This site is powered by WordPress & Buddypress

Other features worth mentioning
- Mobile friendly – Those who have smart phones can visit the site and it should be optimized for mobile screen – Current it should work in iPhone, iPod, Android phones. I tested only in Android.
- Use Profile – Which can be customized to display whatever the user wants to show, this should show when he was active, how many topics started, how many posts/replies etc., (No body could beat SPS till now – ), you can check your stats by using your yahoo profile id http://beta.ponniyinselvan.in/members/put-your-yahoo-id-here
- Content is reformatted – it will display only the email response member posted instead of displaying the chain of replies, it is not perfect yet to understand inline response, but needs some work.
- Site should be faster than the current one – will know the results in a day or two
- We can create as many groups we want to focus on certain topics (scultpure, ponniyin selvan, bronzes, lounge to discuss anything etc.,) instead of discussing everything in one place which sometimes irritates member who do not want to see them

1000th year page has very basic info, but will be adding more as I get more time. Lot of information available to arrange and present. Please visit and find photos, programs etc.. I would like to add the videos, if anybody has taken any video if they can share the link (youtube, for example), can post it if appropriate.
Members are requested to contribute in anyway they can to keep the site updated with contents to showcase the treasure we have to outside world. Comments/suggestions whether positive or negative are welcome.

Ponniyin Selvan to come alive on celluloid – Director Mani Ratnam

After making several films with contemporary themes but with elements of history or mythology, director Mani Ratnam is now set to embark on an ambitious venture of converting Kalki’s epic novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ into a film.
