I have read a very interesting article from Dr.T.N.Ramachandran - in varalaaru magazine or somewhere I believe - on this subject. The article is based on an inscription and iconographic evidence found by him in a small village.
If my memory is not failing, he actually says munaiyedhir mohar were indeed the abathudhavis or a similar clan. The icon shows 12 of them or so with full weapons.
I fully appreciate you touching upon such very interesting and intricate subjects... may I know what was the reference from which you got this term ?
I just re-read 'niththilavalli' by na.parththasarathi and I've just started 'aalavayazhagan' by jegasirpiyan.
The former book is about 'kandungon pandiyan' reclaiming madurai from the kalappiras. The latter is about 'maduraiyai meetta sundarapandiyan'!
Both the books feature the munaiethirmohar padai. In niththilavalli, both the teams work together.
G, do u have that article with you?
BTW, what happened to the much awaited series about Kundhavai. Ever since Lavanya showed me the kalvettu on the southern walls of periya kovil - 'udaiyar rajaraja devar thiruthamakkaiyar, vallavariayan vandiyath devan deviyar, azhwar paranthakan kundhavai...' - am waiting to hear more from you!
