    *Tamil Heritage Workshops for Children -- Summer Camp 2012*

    *May 19 - 20 (Sat - Sun), 2:30 to 6:30 pm, Ragha Sudha Hall, Mylapore*


    Last year, we conducted a Summer Workshop for children aged 10-15 years in
    May 2011. Over a period of two days, we covered topics such as Story of
    scripts, Science puzzles and experiments, Coins of the Great Empires of
    India, Mahabalipuram, Tangram and Photography. It was followed up with an
    exhibition of various photography equipments used in the last 100 years.
    Inspired by the success of last year's program, this year we are back
    again with a slightly bigger format, new interesting topics and site
    visits. The details of the program are below:



    *Saturday, May 19 (2:30 to 6:30 pm):
    *
    1) *Life of Ramanujan, Math Genius*: N Balasubramaniam / Badri Seshadri:
    The fascinating story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, India's greatest modern
    Mathematician

    2) *Astronomy before the telescope*: R Gopu: A brief history and an easy
    introduction to what you can see up in the sky with your naked eyes - Sun,
    Moon, Planets and Stars

    3) *Plants around us*: Prof S Swaminathan: A presentation on the plants we
    see around us and some that we don't see, followed by a guided tour of
    Nagesvara Rao Park to learn about the plants there.

    *Sunday, May 20 (2:30 to 6:30 pm):
    *
    1) *The exciting Math of Srinivasa Ramanujan:* N Balasubramaniam / Badri
    Seshadri: A brief introduction to what Ramanujan did with numbers.

    2) *Kaagitha Origami:* Kirigami Ramesh: Hands-on learning of what lovely
    art you can produce with paper

    3) *Hindu Iconography*: V Sivaramakrishnan / Badri Seshadri: A presentation
    on how to identify icons in Hindu temples and the stories behind them,
    followed by a guided tour of Kapaleesvarar Temple in Mylapore.


    Total number of participants in the Summer Camp: 40


    Fee: Rs. 100/- (One hundred only). Will cover the cost of material and
    refreshments.****

    · The seats are limited. We cannot guarantee that your children
    will be included in the program if you have not booked a place in advance.**

    · Parents are expected to bring the children to Ragha Sudha Hall
    and take them back.****

    · Parents can be present at the venue but are expected to be
    discrete and not interfere with the programme.

    · There will be two outdoor sessions in Kapaleesvarar Temple and
    Nageswara Rao Park. The organizers will take the children to these places
    and get them back to Ragha Sudha Hall for pickup by the parents. The
    parents are also free to come along to these two places.

    Tamil Heritage Trust is a registered Trust (Reg. No. 379/2010) set up to
    promote, document and disseminate Tamil and Indian heritage. We organize
    regular monthly lectures on heritage related topics on the first Saturday
    of every month. We undertake intense study tours to heritage places once a
    year. Over the last three years, we have visited Mamallapuram,
    Ajanta/Ellora and Pudukkottai.
