I have just read that there is an image of Adi Sankara worshipping Siva and Parvati at the garbagraha of kailsanatha temple, Sivasthanam.. The image in somaskanda type but instead of siva - vinayaga is present.
this story is simillar in TN also. Lord siva gave Sankara 5 spadika lingams and soundraya lahari.
nandi took half. the Lingams were installed in kanchi mutt, sringeri Mutt, rameswaram temple, chidambaram temple and one more temple - couldnot recollect.
But the presence of Vinayaka instead of skanda. Is that related to this story?
while most of the images mentioned in the article below can be atributed to nayaks, the few ( which i have given separately belong to a period much earlier- based on the details mentioned in the articles.. i have not seen any of these images - have not noticed the kailsanatha/vaikunda perumal temple either. also i dont have the expertise to tell the period either. )
A slightly larger stone image of Sankara, in a similar penance pose, can be seen in the Vaikuntha perumal temple in Siva-Kanci.
Stuccco images of Sankara and Vyasa are seen in the Kailasanatha temple at kanci. In a Sculptural Panel in the lravttanes'vara temple at kanci one can see by the side of Daksinamurti (in the centre), images of the old stage Vyasa and Sankara Chiselled as a young boy in his early teens.
Soamskanda ( Soamaganesa) is something that have to be studied in detail along with the other sankara images mentioned in the artcile.
hence request you all to study the original photograph.
