katumannar koil bridge @ Udayarkudi
  • Dear Gandhi Sir,

Permit me to add little more spice to your mail.

Kaattu Mannagargudi is on the banks of Veeranam.

Here only VEERANARAYANA PERUMAL temple is located.

    Naadhamunigal hails from this place.

    Azhwarkadiyan worships this Perumal.

Just a KM North of this temple, there is a Siva Temple.

    Named as Anantheeswarar !!

This is NOT hymned in Thevaram.

    Not Vaippusthalam also.

The First of the inscriptions mention that this Temple was built by PARANTAKA I.

AN IMPORTANT INSCRIPTION IN THIS TEMPLE,
PUBLISHED IN THE EPIGRAPIA INDICA -
IS THE REASON FOR US TO SHARE OUR VIEWS HERE !!

In this inscription - the names Aditha Karikalan,
    Ravidasan,
    Parameswaran,
    Soman Sambavan figures !!

This inscription states that the lands of Ravidasan and his brothers were confiscated after they caused the death to Adithakarikalan - who earlier beheaded Veerapandia !! The inscription was in the 2nd Year of Rajaraja I.

After this inscription was published - Kalki ventured to write Ponniyinselvan !!

put : UDAYARKUDI INSCRIPTIONS in SEARCH.
    or : ADITHA KARIKALAN.

You will find interesting discussions we had in the past.

About 2 - 3 years back - Kumbabhishegam of this Anantheeswarar temple took place.

The amazing number of inscriptions comparable ONLY to other prominent places of worship like Srirangam - Akilandeswari - Thiruvalanchuzhi is something stunning !!

Some of them are published in SII - Vol VIII and XIII ..

    thanks and rgds / sps

  • thank you sir, very kind of you to stress the importance of this place once again.i have read the messages earlier in this group. i have been told about the ravidhasan episode by a freind too. in fact i went to this temple on this ground only. the town has a saivite quartrers and a vaisnavite quarters. the saivite part is udayarkudi and the vaisnavite one is veeranarayanpuram. the adjoining water bodies and paddy fields, the melakadamboor stone idols, the entire perimeter of the place resounds cholan might and prosperity. the inscriptions here are really breathtaking. so much. the temple itself is very neat and clean.the katumannar kudi will be connected by a main road from chennai soon and it will lead to mayiladuthurai. tours may be operated from chennai to tanjore district through this bridge across kollidam and save 40 km.

the circuit journey from chidambaram to thiruvengadu via katumannarkoil, sirkali and vatheeswarnkoil was very very pleasurable. a similar experience i get is in the mayiladuthurai- semponnarkoil route. these areas are still, pristine and chaste.god has given me senses to feel it and i thank him to have given me this sort of experience!

this forum is indeed a great boon to all tanjore history lovers and researchers. what information would earlier have taken several years, are exchanged at days time through this forum.
    i thank you once again.
    gandhi
