Tribute to Dr C Meenakshi - A history warrior who left us very early
  • Hi,
I came across about the references of Dr C Meenakshi in a book by Dennis Hudson,
The Body of God. This book is about Vaikuntha Perumal temple at Kanchi, and as
per Hudson Dr Meenakshi was the only one who knew most of this temple. Later on
I got a book, published by ASI, The Historical Sculptures of the Vaikuntha
Perumal Temple, Kanchi. This is one of the best research book I have read about
    temple art.
Dr C Meenakshi was the first woman Ph. D. from University of Madras. She got it
for her thesis 'Administrative and Social Life Under the Pallavas'. It is very
unfortunate that she left us in 1940, at an early age of 33. I read a very nice
    article athttp://madrasmusings.com/Vol 19 No 19/otherstories.html.
I have corrected my Kanchipuram album with the help from the deductions by Dr
Meenakshi and sketches from Alexander Rea. You can view these from image 329
onwards in my album at following location:

One more thing to notice is that as per the panels in this temples, it seems
that Nandivarman Pallavamalla did not come from south east Asia but from
    Andhradesa, north of Kanchi.
  • Excellent collections Saurabh,

DrMeenakshi, worked with great scholors like nilakanta sastri. God taken her at her early age on seeing her performance for his/her benefit. What to do? Any publication of Dr miniakshi is available? If so you may kindly inform.
  • Yes, The Historical Sculptures of the Vaikuntha Perumal Temple, Kanchi by Dr
Meenakshi is available from ASI. This costs about Rs 210. I recently purchased
this book, however a pdf form of this book is also there, you can please check
this with Arvind as he was kind enough to provide one to me.
