velliyambalam
  • Friends

remeber our discussions on the chidambaram pon ambalam being mentioned by Appar and thirumoolar.

While searching for the Ramayana article,

The Silappadigaram mentions a velliyambalam, siva and madurai godess. ( A velliyambalam was there in Madurai)

In Puram there is a Velli Ambalathu Thunjiya Sezhiyan .

    a. Now was velliyambalam  a separate village Madurai?
    b. Was it a Siva temple?
    c. Was it a temple?
    d. Ilango mentions clearly about 5 of the 6 main gods of Hinduism. But here why he mentions her as a theivam instead of Kotravai? or Umai?

Is there any detailed articles? Not convinced with the explanation in the book the cult of Godess pathini because the Velliyambalutu Thunjiya should also be considered.

  • Dear Mr.Shankar,

When you speak of Ilango and Hinduism, that is an anachronism. You can never pick the word Hinduism in Silappathikaram. I wonder weather the word 'Koyil' is ever used by Ilango

Hinduism was the word used by Alien aggressors like Arabs and Brittishers . You say "d. Ilango mentions clearly about 5 of the 6 main gods of Hinduism." Can you be spellout the names, please ?

  • I replied to this - but it is missing

Of the six gods of Shanmadam ilango mentions 5( except Vinayagar).
  • Silappadikaram

Kovil - mentioned but referring to Ko (king) il (house) - palace
