Madras Day Celebrations.
  • Hi All,

Following is a link for an interesting article I read about Madras Day
celebrations that is going happen next month. It gives an interesting
view that we are ignoring more older historical things when
celebrating Madras day. Check the article in the following link.

"On 22 August 1639, Francis Day secured the Grant by the Damarla
Venkatadri Nayakudu, Nayak of Wandiwash giving over to the British
East India Company a three-mile long strip of land, a fishing village
called Madraspatnam, copies of which were endorsed by Andrew Cogan,
the Chief of the Masulipatam Factory, and are even now preserved. The
Grant was for a period of two years and empowered them to build a
fort and castle on an approximate 5 square kilometre sand
strip.....Francis Day, his dubash (Interpreter) Beri Thimmanna Chetti
and their superior Andrew Cogan can be considered as the founders of
    Madras (now Chennai)

    Hi sivaram

I think PS group can do its bit.

we could list all surviving monuments prior to that date.
we could list the rulers who may have mentioned places in this town
also list the royal edicts surviving still

and a lot more for our city. if we start now perhaps we could
convince the organisers to include them too.

  • For our group, such things are food for thought. But the masses out of
the group...I feel kollywood is feeding wrong history. Atleast the
throwing of idol and saiva-vaishnavite conflict in Dasavatharam are
true and the rest exaggerated history...I am not sure about St.Thomas,
when everything is speculation and not even a single proof to
    ascertain any of them.

Another version I read is, the remains for St.Thomas was sent to Syria
(??) by the then king in around 54AD or so.... so etha nambarathu...

on the lighter note - I heard that Nakkeeran did a review on
Dasavatharam collection and it seems even the records made by Sivaji
are broken. There are remote instances where distributors incurred
loss with Sivaji but no loss with Dasavatharam. Sathyam theater saw a
40 year record high collection of 92 lakhs in just 17 days. Mayajal
collected around 90 lakhs in just 14 days where as with Sivaji it was
1.2 crores in 118 days. And it seems for the first time repeat
audience for Kamal movie which is very rare.

Again, people -dont brand me as Kamal fanatic...I am just sharing the
info i read. Nothing more nothing less...
  • Vijay, I saw 'Missiamma' recently and there was a scene where Gemini/Savitri were boarding trams in Chennai. It was truly intersting to watch, Missiama was made in 1955 I think.
