since you are seriously interested in this, I'd suggest a book called "Kudamuzha" by Dr Kudavoil. Though the topic of the book is not vitanka shrines, he beautifully deals with it in later chapters.
To your question: Yes there is skanda in between and somaskanda is present in all vitanka shrines.
