Paintings on the wall of Tanjore Temple
  • The discovery of paintings around tanjore temple is quite significant
in the history of art of India. I remember prof Swami's comments
about them some time back in ps group reg this.
Apart from what Dr.JB has listed, there is also a shiva as
tiripurantaka and the famous Rajaraja - Karuvur chitthar painting.
In his book "Raajarajeswaram - the pinnacle of chola art",
B.Venkatraman (son of Dr.SRB) devotes a chapter for the study of
these paintings. I have a few photos from the book and shall upload
them - but the quality of paintings is not very nice.
The lime plaster method adopted had some limitations - for example I
read that the painting had to be done within few hours so that the
colours set well with the plaster. B.V writes that large panels were
completed almost simultaneously - by several people working together
    in syncronisation.
Considering this limitation, the beauty of tanjore paintings become
    more significant.
The bearded painting of Rajaraja is almost similar to the sculptures
found in Chidambaram and Ammangudi (Krishnan raman's native place -
near tanjore) - along with his wifes.
We should get these sculpture photos too..
  • Forgot to add something - It was sri.Govindasamy (of ASI ?) who first
discovered a layer of ancient chola paintings beneath the Nayak
    Paintings.
