I was in for a surprise yesterday at Grand Sweets, Adayar. I was there purchasing sweets and while paying the cash they told me that I can choose some free books from their stall.
When I went there to select the books, the first thing that my eyes went was to a amar chitra katha book titled Raja Raja Chola. I was so surprised to see that. I picked that up immediately. I did not go through the book fully, but it looks different from PS. Vanthiyathevan is there, Vanathi is there, Karikalan get stabbed to death by Pandiya conspirators, Arul Mozhi and Vanthiyathevan ties knot on the same day and there is a page saying about Raja Raja's Kandalur conquest. I guess this would have been Amar Chitra Katha's first book about a south indian king.
I remember having read something like this almost 2 decades back - probably the same Amar Chitra Katha. I also think its translated version was serialised in "SiRuvar Malar", the children's supplement (on Fridays) of "Dina Malar".
I also remember it refers to Aditha Karikalan as Karikalan only.
Ohh. During my school days I had a spend a lot of time buried inside the Amar Chitra katha books at my hostel in RKM. I have not seen a book about south indian king. That's why I got so excited the other day when i saw this one. I will check online if there is some list of titles with the Amar Chitra Katha.
If at all our dream of actual PS as a comic is going to be a dream itself, how about asking the help of Amar Chitra Katha publications itself for a comic on PS? Just wondering whether we could give a push since there was a lot of talk on this in our forum?
I remember reading an Amar Chitra Katha on Raja raja Chola as a child. Funnily enough it had Nandini's character in it but it wasn't the story of PS either. Nandini was depicted as having seen her brother, the Pandyan king killed by Aditya Karikalan! I don't recollect who was credited with the story. It certainly wasn't historical, but fictional and `PS inspired'. I wish someone would make an animation film on PS in the style of good Japanese animation (which is mainly hand drawn and hand painted) - but with Maniam's illustrations as a guide.
Just wanted to share my account of the book fair...
Amazing place, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took me and my wife six hours to graze through the stalls and the food courts and juice centers definitely did help. Our thirst for jigarthanda was satisfied too - We have been looking for it all round the city.
I just wish they had provided for seating within the fair. My legs were almost giving way when we came out.
But one thing that stuck me was that the qualitative books were with publishers stalls... we hardly had any interest to go into book shops... just too many topics and books so much so, that unless you know what you wanted, entering a book shop would be almost futile...
publishers with a theme were the most useful... you could actually go into a publisher with specific interests and explore to find out if they have new material. For example, I know the kind of stuff I would get in Ramakrishna mutt stall or pustak mahal or Asian educational studies.
Bought 'Thillayil oru kollaikaran' among other books. Thanks Venkatesh. Your wife really made us feel at home - one place where we were offered the most premium commodity there - seats :)
Overall it was a pleasant experience but for realizing that I lost my wallet when I had to pay for the first book. oh, yes, we did find it and ultimately bought that book ;)
where this book will be available . Is it a weekly magazine? will it be available at normal book shops? pls give some details. this is the first time i m hearing this name . And in the book exhibition i saw the novel "thillayil oru kollaikaran " . What s the story about ? have any body gone through that. --- In [email protected], "Sivaram Kannan"
