Jana, Looks like they had a wonderful land survey system those days. Karasima's (what's the spelling?) book, which Mani and I have, eloborates on that, along with the other revenue system used.
Look at this: This is an inscription from Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram, quoted from Harle.
WEST GOPURA: West Gopura- right of entrance. No. 360 of 1913. Dynasty, King: __. Date: Saka 1517, Durmukhi, Chaitra, full-moon, Chaitra, lunar eclipse. Language and alphabet: Tamil. Gift of a village surnamed Purappettai, for meeting the expenses of one day during the Arpisi-Pooram festivities, in honour of the goddess.
Oru naal functionukku ooraye kuduthangalam!!
Pavithra: Yes, I have lot of good stuff up my sleeve.
Everybody: The inscriptions on Chidambaram temple is one and the pics of Thanjavur temple taken sometime in the late 50s /early 60s is another. You sould see it to believe it! (These are from Harle: Temple gateways in South India). But, whoa! we dont want to be bogged down by information overload, right? So, I'll be in silent mode and wait for the slog overs :)
Jana: Thats something very interesting, which you are doing. Cool man!
