THANJAVUR: The Archaeological Survey of India has given a facelift to Iravatheeswaraswamy temple at Darasuram near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district.
A world heritage monument, the temple is a tourist attraction. The main vimana, with a chariot-like mandapam, have been renovated by the ASI. Reconstruction of the northern prahara mandapam is on.
Fifty-four pillars 27 on each side have been rearranged and stone slabs are being laid. The mandapam runs to a distance of 60 metres. The ASI has taken up the work at a cost of Rs.42 lakh.
According to ASI sources, the work will be completed in a couple of months. "The work is very intricate because the slabs and pillars have to be arranged as per the original design. Hence, they are numbered and placed in the same position. If any change occurs, then the whole structure will not fit," the sources added.
After completion of the mandapam, flooring of the prahara will be taken up. The ASI has laid beautiful lawns surrounding the temple. Illumination of the lawn has been done and there is a separate car parking area.
According to assistant mason, ASI, Dhanabal, the temple is getting a lot of tourists. "Even locals have started coming in the evening and spending time at the temple," he said.
UNESCO has declared the temple a world heritage monument. It is an all-stone structure replete with rare sculptures.
