nice map. The one thing that always fascinates me whenever i look at these old maps is the abundance of water bodies. The Coovum river flowing so beautifully through Chennai as does the Adyar river. It really must have been Singara Chennai!! Nowadays these two rivers have become part of a really elaborate drainage system (if we can call it a system)! We tell ourselves that we, as a nation, are at an advance stage of development. I feel we are fooling ourselves into thinking such things. Not only Chennai but all the 4 metros are examples for countries around the world on how not to develop. Im reading Khushwant Singh's autobiography in which he describes Delhi and its surroundings. I can tell from his really beautiful descriptions and my recent visits to the capital that we have really made things worse for ourselves in the name of development. For everything from corruption to inflation we tend to blame the government. But to be honest the blame for destroying nature's truly remarkable gifts to India rests with us, the citizens of India. I write this mail sitting in 40 Deg C heat knowing that i cant blame anybody, for this rampant rape of nature, except myself.
early diarists like pachaiyappa mudaliar write about bathing in its waters

but if you realise all cities need to be on river banks.
for drinking water, drainage, protection and transport( marakanam to nellore could be navigated on the buckingham canal those days) s till in chennai you find firewood and hay shops near the canal only
> " Thannithoraimarket " on Royapettah high rd is not connected to any > water body today . But just behind it there is koovam in which small > boats used to pick and unload usables ... in those days.. ! >
Hi SPS thani thurai market is connected to buckingham canal
there are three distinct water bodies in chennai. people generalise them as cooum
cooum is the river which originates beyond sriperumbudur and joins the sea near madras university and fort st george
adayar river which originates near chenbarambakkam and flows into the sea near raja annamalai puram and theosophical society
these two are natural rivers.
buckingham canal is man made. it was done to give food for work during a famine. the bucking ham canal runs between the ecr and omr. cuts the adayar in kottupuram and the cooum near all india radio,
you can find locks there.
