Athi Varadharajar Perumal
  • Dear all,
I came to know recently that there is a Athi Varadharajar temple in
the pushkarni of Shri Varadharajar temple of Kanchipuram. They remove
the idol once every 40 years and public can have darshan for 48 days.
The coming one is I think in 2017. I am interested in its origins and
history. Tried searching the net but got little information. Can
    anyone give me more details?
  • Dear SPS sir,
Thanks for the great information. Have a few queries.

    1. Does the word Athi mean "the wood from Fig tree" or "Elephant"?
Since in Marathi Athi means Elephant. In tamil Athi means Fig.

    2. If it is made of wood wouldn't it get decomposed by keeping under
    water for 40 years?

    3. Sr. Varadhar??? You mean to say this predates to much earlier period?
