Temples of Cholas and Pallavas
  • Dear Ilavarasu,

I mean to say Gangaigonda Cholapuram and not Gangaigondan of
Thirunelveli.G.g.c.Puram was the Capitalof Rajendra Cholan. The
temple at G.g.c.puram has an underground passage. The passage starts
from the open mouth of a huge stone Lion.

The temple at Tarasuram has many stone carvings( small figures
of Gods, men, women, animals, events, etc.chisseled on stone pillars and
walls). The muthunagai( pearl smile) Goddess on the front wall of the
temple mantapa is a masterpiece. Her smile is true and fascinates all
including foreigners. The lingothpavar (God appearing from a linga
after opening it) is the biggest I have seen.

I have read somewhere that Rajaraja-1 saw the pallava
masterpiece at Kanchipuram(Kailashanatha temple). He was spellbound
by its beauty. He was fascinated by its art and beauty he decided to
build a shiva temple for the sake of shaivism and art and
    architecture.

Kalki's Sivakamiyin sabatham narrates the war between pallavas
and chalukyas. The final battle was between Narasimha pallava and
    pulikesi-2 of chalukiyas.

The Kailashanatha temple of Kanchi was built Rajasimha pallava
    the son of Narasimha pallava.
The war between pallavas and chalukyas continued till the
end of western chalukya dynasty. The imperial Cholas who came to
power after the downfall of pallavas were also disturbed by a wester
India Dynasty. It was Rastrakutas. The elder brother of ponniyin selvan
(Rajaraja-1) was defeated by the Rastrakutas at Thakkolam near
today's Arrakkonam.Kalki narrates this battle through the memories
of paluvettiaar.Aditya karikala was probably killed this war but
Kalki had a different story to tell.
