khanoji Angre - The Great Marathaa General
  • Many of you might heard about him,the great

marathaa navy General. Also you can meet him in

    Sandilyan's "Jala Deepam".Ok,let us now see,what

the british encyclopedia of India writtern on 1885

    says about him,

"About the middle of the 17th century,Kanhoji

    Angria,who had been a Mahratta soldier,was made

governer of Severndrug(i guess it is Sindu

    Durg.He soon assumed independence,obtained

possession of nearly all the Maharatta fleet, and

conquered territory on the mainland. In 1722,the

British and Portuguese made and unsucessful

attacko on his strong fort of Colabah;(Near today's

Nariman Point near Bombay- i guess)in 1724 an

attack on Viziadrug (Vijaya durg) or Gheriah

failed, and when he died at the close of 1728,his

sway extended over a hundred miles of the coast

line.He was succeeded by his illegitimate

    son,Tullaji Angaria.In 1755,the E.I Company's

    marine,under commodore James,in concert with a

    Mahratta army,captured Severndrug and

    Bancoote;and in 1756,Admiral Watson destroyed

Angaria's fleet (11 th February), and the following

day Gheriah surrendered to Colonel Clive. The last

descendant died about the middle of the 19th

    century,and the territory was annexed.

The point here is till he die, he was undefeated.
  • hi

two or three firsts to his name

for the first time i guess the english and the portugese had to pool
in their resources to try to defeat him. and failed

there is a story that he was the first to annex andamans for india

but I think it is rather farfetched.

Kanhoji's harassment of British commercial interests was extreme and
hence they called him a pirate

    some more info

The Western Naval command of the Indian Navy was named INS Angre on
September 15, 1951 in honour of the valiant sea commander. A statue of
him exists at the old Bombay Castle located within the enclave located
at the Naval Dockyard, South Mumbai.

The old Kennery Lighthouse, on Khanderi Island which marks the
southern boundary of the Mumbai Port, was renamed as Kanhoji Angre
    Light House
