    1. Modern India

started in Chennai, according to historian S Muthiah
    . All
the institutions that form the core of the nation – the Indian army, the
civil service, and even the Indian National Congress
    -
have their origins here, he argues.
    2. British victory at the Battle of Plassey that firmly established
Britain as the leading power in India was secured by Madrasis. Robert
    Clive brought
them – 80% of the entire British army that fought in the war – from the
    southern city.
    3. “The trignometrical surveys, land survey, agriculture and zoological
    survey started from Madras,”
    4. The company realized that a civil service was needed to govern the
country. So, Charles Trevelyn, a governor of Madras, founded the Indian
    Civil Services.

    5. In 1688 a municipality was founded in Madras; in 1679, the first
joint stock companies were founded in George Town
    and soon after,
    the Bank of Madras.

    6. Indian National Congress, was born on the banks of the Adyar river,
Muthiah said. A O Hume mooted the idea for the Congress at a meeting at
    the Theosophical Society.

    Dear Sir,

I think the second point is not of anything to be proud of, as because of that,
whole India came under the rule of British, and we lost our freedom.

    Rgds.,

    Shiv
