alai osai
  • hai all,

Now let us break the rule that only PS has to be
discussed in this forum.... Letus leave PS and SS

has anyone read "Alaiosai". The novel is set in the
backdrop of indian freedom Struggle between
1920s and 1947...Surya, lalitha, seetha all are
    excellent castings.

a superb novel which you cannot keep down for long. i
read the novel in exactly 3 days..i could not miss it
    for long.
it still lingers in my memory.

if i have to rate "Alaiosai" it stands at par with PS.

The best historical novel is PS and the best Social
Novel is "Alaiosai".. A flamboyant novel with no let
down in speed and at times even overtakes PS in the
narration and the turn of events.

Has anyone read that.. Pls share ur experiences

  • Thank you
I remember seeing that on and off in DD I remember Aravind as Raghavan
    and ARS as Seetha's father

When I was in school alai osai did not have the same romanticism or
thrills of PS or SS may be I was put off by the thabal office starting

Started it three days ago and I have completed two bagams....May be
Kalki was write after all May be this was a great work but I still
    think PS is the best

    What was the chronology
I know PK came before SS but what was the order of the rest

Second does anyone have a copy of Alai Osai Teleserial?
  • Dear Sri...
Alai Osai. Hmm. I remember seeing the serial too. God, I *was* a kid, then
    :-). I hadn't read the book - later, I did. I still remember my mother's
criticism of it - that certain areas in the acting left much to be desired.
Also, in the way of all serials back then, it was all rather artificial. I
watched the climax. It was *not* well done.
Personally, I like the 'thabaal ofiice' opening - it lays the foundation
for future incidents. After all, the story rapidly develops from then on,
and one can't enjoy the characters if one doesn't know *what* they're like,
in the beginning. The same thing basically happens in PS too. The first
paagam is rather slow- and each succeeding part escalates in speed. :-))).
The last part is explosive :-)
I've read that Kalki said that he thought AO was his best work...this was
probably because he drew upon his own personal experiences, while writing
AO. I personally think the character Surya - dedicated, loyal, pure patriot
    - is Kalki himself. It's not surprising that he held AO close to his heart.
Then again, the whole independence era was happening at the time of AO, and
Kalki's story was...very recent (unlike PS or SS, which are historicals.).
But yes, I guess it wouldn't have the appeal of PS. :-) AO *is*slower. It's
a completely different arena, after all.
But Kalki's portrayal of Seetha is magnificent - it always amazes me as to
how astute he was, in writing the women of his stories - Nandhini, Seetha,
Sivagami. Brilliant psycho-analysis. Their anger, possessiveness, jealousy,
    love...
He also wrote SounderaRaghavan very well. Particularly at the end of paagam
    two. :-)
My two cents - or paise.
  • Hello all,

    Hope everyone is doing well.
I just finished reading Alai osai. When it was written? Was it written
b4 PS or after PS? In my opinion, alai osai is not as good as PS or SS.

    With best regards,
    Guhan.
