ancient festivals in lower thanjai regions
  • freinds,
as the adi peruku is celebrated today, there are 3 festivals comes to my mind at this moment,in the lower kaveri region.

    1. the karai yeria thirunal( day of landing the shore) by appar
this is celebrated near cuddalore where appar swamigal reached the shores after the pallavan's order to banish him.
    2. thiru-mulai-pal vizha ( celebration of the breast feeding) this is done in seerkazhi, a popular public festive in the memory of sambandar swamigal's feeding by goddess parvathi
3.mangani thiruvizha( mango festival): this is in karaikal. again very popular locally. the day to remember the karaikal ammaiyar's donation of a mango to lord siva.

these three festivals are connected to the saivite revival and probably 1400 years old. they are also much deeply rooted with people and have mass participation in those localities. a bond that has held us so long and deeper. even in the internet age these are reality! that a few such festives would be seen elsewhere. that is the uniqueness of kaveri delta culture.

  • Dear Dr. Gandhiram,

Karikkal Maangani Festival just conducted about a fortnight back.
I was fortunate to take part.

Seerkazhi - Sambandar breast-fed by Umai - is another interesting festival. I have attended a couple of times.

Karaiyerikuppam - Appar - festival I missed so far.

Actually - Appar does not hymn of his ordeals in the hands of Pandya / Jain Power Centres - either in Madurai (where he was put in Lime Keln ) or in Mallai - where he was tied to heavy stone and submerged under the sea - water.

he reached ashore near Cuddalore and hymned at Thirupadhiripuliyur .. There also he did not hymn of these ordeals.

In THIRUNEELAKKUDI - near Aaduthurai - he hymned of these ordeals and added that under such great Ordeals " i was placing my faith on Thiruneelakkudi Easan only " !!

Presentday Thiruneelakkudi is yet to publicise of the Great Faith imposed by Appar !!

    1. appar came ashore after the stone to which he was tied and thrown into
    the ocean floated

    2. sambandar was not breast fed - he was a 3 year old boy then - so he was
fed milk but in a cup

last comment on this post clarifies

    3. karaikkal ammai gifting mango to shiva is also not correct.

  • 1. The rock reaching shore is celbrated. It is believed that lord Siva did that. Hence the place is called " Yetri Vittan Kuppam"

    2. The milk given to Sambandar in a cup is considered as the divine breast milk.Hence the festival is Mulaippal Vizha. Even today women bring their kids, get the milk offerred and give it to the kids.

    3. Adiyar was consiered siva. Hence in karaikkal mangani vizha, Bikshadanar goes for procession.

The Utsavams in these temples are celebrated in this way.
  • to clarify

    3. karaikkal ammai gifting mango to shiva is also not correct. when she gave
it , she gave it to a sivanadiyaar. the miracle was when her husband asked
for the second mango, the lord gave her the second mango

Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man
  • Other Festivals

    1. Sambandar Marriage and attaing siva's feet at Nallur Perumanam

    2. Manickavasagar vizha in chidambaram where Vasagar moves towards Siva after each verse in Thirvembavai is recited.

    http://www.tamilnadutemples.co.in/temple.asp?serialno=4&tempid=T0303&desctitle=Festivlas+In+NATARAJA+TEMPLE

Now after reading this hope that people will know that how Tamil is celebrated in Chidambaram.

    3. Appar attaining siva's feet in Thirunallur.

    4. Thiruchengottangudi - Pillaikkari festival .

  • Dear Mr.Kumar,

This is a subject of Child Psychology. K.P.S.Menon ICS wrote in his autobiography that, he was breast fed by his mother until he was six.

Thats an interesting part. All along I used wonder when i come acorss 'unna
mulai amman' in TVmalai or the usage of 'unnamulai' to refer parvati in any
of the thevaram hymes, and think if she have fed Gnana sambandar, then how
    is she unnamulai?

This 'cup' holds good, when we come across so many references to 'unnamulai'
  • dear sir

feeding ones own is different. anyway, the reference is to umai feeding him
in a porkkinnam - golden bowl
  • this week is the world breast feeding week. so we shall encourage breast feeding hypothesis instead of this "kinnam"" theory
    gandhi
  • Sir,

With due regards...just because it is breast feeding week, should we change
    the historical fact? :)

In fact Vijay's clarification cleared my long time doubt...Parvathi is
called 'unna mulai amman' in Tiruvannamalai and in various other temples.
Thevaram and other tirumurai's sing her as 'unna mulai','seppila mulai nan
mangai'...etc. So i used to wonder, if she is 'unna mulai' then how can she
    bave fed sambandar? logic idikuthe???

So this 'kinnam' part clears that doubt and its evident that, she is 'unna
    mulai' :)
  • Dear Sathish!

SHE is the mother. And mother for all. And Gnanasambanthar is said to be avtar of Lord Muruga. The Breast feeding was not done but only breast milk was given. The following details you can find in thevaaram.org.

Legends and reality could be quite different.

Ammai was a great saint no question but there is a lot of science in the approach that was taken by her to the path.
For ex: Was she accompanied by ghosts or was she in the form of a ghost herself while visiting Kailash.
Did she do sirasasana while climbing Mt.Kailash (if she physically ever went there)??
  • if thathuvam mixes with reality - there r bound to be confusions...
