Gone are the days
  • Dear All,

It is Worth recalling our school days .....

    Gone are the days

Gone are the days,......but not the memories

When the school reopened in July,

And we settled in our new desks and benches.

    Gone are the days

When we queued up in book depot,

And got our new books and notes.

    Gone are the days

When we wanted two Sundays and no Mondays, yet

Managed to line up daily for the morning prayers.

    Gone are the days

We learnt writing with slates and pencils, and progressed

To fountain pens and ball pens and then micro tips.

    Gone are the days

We began drawing with crayons and evolved to

Colour pencils and finally sketch pens.

    Gone are the days

We started calculating first with tables and then with

Clarkes tables and advanced to calculators and computers.

    Gone are the days

When we chased one another in the corridors in Intervals,

And returned to the classrooms drenched in sweat.

    Gone are the days

When we had lunch in classrooms, corridors,

Playgrounds, under the trees and even in cycle sheds.

    Gone are the days

When all the colours in the world,

Decorated the campus on the Second Saturdays.

    Gone are the days

When a single P.T. period in the week's Time Table,

Was awaited more eagerly than the monsoons.

    Gone are the days

When cricket was played with writing pads as bats,

And Neckties and socks rolled into balls.

    Gone are the days

When few played "kabadi" and "Kho-Kho" in scorching sun,

While others simply played "book cricket" in the confines of

    classroom.

    Gone are the days

    Of fights but no conspiracies,

    Of Competitions but seldom jealousy.

    Gone are the days

When we used to watch Live Cricket telecast,

In the opposite house in Intervals and Lunch breaks.

    Gone are the days

When few rushed at 3:45 to

"Conquer" window seats in our School bus.

    Gone are the days

While few others had "Big Fun", "Ber-kabeet",

"kulfi ice", "Burf-gola !" and "pepsi !" at 4o Clock.

    Gone are the days

Of Sports Day, and the annual School Day ,

And the one-month long preparations for them.

    Gone are the days

Of the stressful Quarterly, Half Yearly and Annual Exams,

And the most enjoyed holidays after them.

    Gone are the days

Of tenth and twelfth standards, when we

Spent almost the whole year writing revision tests.

    Gone are the days

We learnt, we enjoyed, we played, we won, we lost,

We laughed, we cried, we fought, we thought.

    Gone are the days

With so much fun in them, so many friends,

So much experience, all this and more.

    Gone are the days

But not the memories, which will be

Lingering in our hearts for ever and ever and

    Ever and ever and Ever

Gone are the days,......but not the memories

  • Dear Diwakar,

Interesting. That reminds me Keats' Ode on Greecian Urn :

It is said, the tree - the lover and his lass shall never be
separated and shall always remain unaltered (since made of clay & not
    real)!

You have written of Pepsi & TV Crickets :

Some of us have seen & lost "OSO - soft drinks" & heard commentary in
pocket radios (mostly in the toilets of the college or workplace!)

    Gone are the days .....

Imagine what our PS Characters will feel, if they happen to descend
on this land again these years?! Gone are those Eras!

    Fondly, SB
  • thats very odd SB
I was just thinking about the same thing this morning as I was driving down the motorway...
Imagine vandhiyadevan talking the cholan express or crossing the palk straits with the help of our freindly TIGERs....

Imagine the shock Alwarkadiyan will have seeing all our lasses in mins and shorts.....but I still think Nandhini will break hearts as ever even in todays world

  • Days are always gone, sometimes before you have time to
wink, sometimes after prolonged boredom, in any case the days are
gone. But the pleasure is in the fact tha the memory lingers and
never dies. It is the pleasure we derive from recalling every moment
that we enjoyed in the past, that makes the past more interesting
    than even the present.
People say "forgive and forget" in quite a few situations. I have
always opposed. "forgive - yes", "forget - how", especially when I am
a human being and not a vegetable. similarly one never forgets and
we should thank HIM for this, because we keep on recalling all our
good old days and repeatedly relive them. This is life, the most
pleasurable part of our lives. and also sometimes a little painful
part of our life! (madugal theeniyai asai poduvadhu pola, naam
ninaivugalai asai podugiromey - idhai vida veru enna vendum?)

Yes, we should all get together, nothing better than joining the next
tour as it may serve double purposes.
  • Dear Dr. Sridhar,

    You are absolutely right....

Driving always gives us an exclusive time for ourselves to ponder on
    many things...

1000 yrs back & now - very interesting flow of thoughts ...

I always try to go back to those days mentally - like imagining the
road conditions when - alwars - adiyars reached the temples -
historical characters went on espionage - especially during nights -
communication systems - food availability outside their relative /
friends circle - previleges avl - dresses - shopping - what were
    manufactured - traded - imported - education - entertainment -
    festivals and what not ?!

and such personalities with ultra-modern systems & means .. !

    Enough materials to munch ...

Personalities of the Past, if they get into the present?!

    Interesting...

Incidentally, I am so much influenced by these factors that I easily
work with a guy calling himself Arunmozhi or thrilled when get a
credit card enquiry through a Vanathi!

    Fondly, SB
