request to members
  • I'm not a moderator but i really have to say this.

While replying to a "long thread" or a single email members are requested to
DELETE the previous messages from the mail they are typing. As after 10 or
20 messages if someone replies then it becomes a really long mail.
This only takes 3 seconds to delete the previous messages from the window
    you are typing.
Please do this without fail to help us enjoy your mails.
  • Hi Thiru

now that moderation restrictions have been removed is there some way we can ration the number of mails per person.say to ten per day.
just imagine somebody in europe or us opening his screen and seeing 100 mails in the time difference.
its not fair if they cant participate in the debate.
    venketesh
  • There is a option were people can get daily updates as a SINGLE mail. Is
this possible here? Its really good as we can have a single mail instead of
100 mails and also wont miss any of the fights sorry..discussions :)
  • Now on working days, will write after 9 Pm to 10 Pm. On traveling days after 9.30 to 10.

    That will be my contribution.
  • Yes. Message digest option is available. It is a single mail, but it can
be a 'hanumar val' if your suggestion to delete the earlier thread while
replying. Individual mail option will clog the mailbox with numbers
while daily digest option, with bulk. No escape. Web only option gives
you the freedom to hop, skip and jump over junk or 'not my line' mails.

  • Hi

in a group like ours that suddenly flares up, the best option is see it on the screen

    venketesh
  • Hi venkat
I see it on the screen only! Do you have any other display device? Just
    funning!
    Sampath
  • Venkat,

As far as I know, there is nothing like that. That is one of the
limitations of the yahoo groups. As others suggested, when we approve
the users, we can set their email delivery to digest to start with.
Then if they want they have the option to change it. If you want to
have better control, then yahoo groups might not be right choice. We
might have to choose some other software.
  • For moderator control the suggestion would be to go into forums like ponniyinselvan.in where you can have subcategory of topic of discussion.
SO when moderators feel that one topic has transformed into chit chat, they can move that thread to another sub category.
This will allow people to chit chat and have a separate thread for serious discussions!
  • Guys,

My 2 paise only on technology as others were covered by veteran moderators.

As far as I know, Yahoo groups and other groups application on the
web (including google groups) do not have the control as a moderator I
would need. I raised few of those issues earlier and asked opinion on
moving to different platform of our own, but wasn't considered. Let me
    highlight those.

    1. Can't lock topic, even though moderators say that the topic has
been closed for discussion, anybody can keep sending mails on that
topic, there is no way we can lock that topic.
    2. Email chain, all web based emails keep the sender's message when
we reply, result, as the discussion goes intense, the message becomes
    big.
    3. Subject gets changed in the middle of the discussion - As we keep
discussing suddenly the topic may be split or diverted to some other -
yahoo groups would still consider that as a same topic and display it
same way, if the discussion is around the same subject it is fine,
otherwise, it will be a mixed subject in one thread.

The best option would be to provide a hybrid platform where those
who wants to send email to discuss can still proceed (only case by
case as this will create email chain problem) and those who can read
and post messages on the web based application can also continue to do
so. That might provide better control. But on the other side, this
might get expensive as the number of users increase over the period of
time and somebody should maintain it (upgrades to server, application,
    tuning, etc.,).

Since everybody is mentioning (threatening?) that all the
discussions are archived @ http://ponniyinselvan.in, I am going to
tell one thing, it is not happening since the PSVP Vizha as there is a
glitch and I couldn't spend time to fix amidst my work and personal
commitments. I will be fixing it, but there is no ETA now.

Temporary solutions to those who turned the individual email
option - move to Gmail and ingore the topics you are interested, since
gmail display in threaded format, it won't be that difficult. Request
    to read http://ponniyinselvan.in/pages/welcome-new-member.html for
    more details.

Moderation/Review is very subjective irrespective of guidelines or
rules and doing it as a hobby (couldn't find right word, like SPS and
moderators do when they find time) makes it more difficult with tons
of mails. This forum has been sailing for 7 years, would really hope
to see lot more healthy discussions where others can find what they
    wanted.
  • Dear Thiru, very well put. I agree with you that all moderators are professionals and can only contribute a certain percent of their time.

Unfortunately what that makes of a forum is one very unclear guidelines and two many discussions that border on ticking timebombs - you just dont know who is going to take offence and blow up when since everyone can say anything they like. Again we had another example just today in a regular discussion when someone said a Ganesha idol 'cannot' be an exhibit - that is a belief, not a fact. Ganesha idols are exhibits in museums all over the world. So here we go opening another can of worms if we discuss that...

In the absence of rules and people who have time to do the hard core moderation - my appeal would be to people to only talk to others with whom you feel you have views in common, one only knows that from experience - and to me it is the only thing that works here.

  • Good.

Now i dont understand the following:

Fact: By the First person: a 'moorthi' is a term normally used to refer to an idol
    > > > that is sanctified and under worship. An idol is an imitation of a
    > > > moorthi that belongs in a museum or a showcase.
    > > > >
    > > > > The Nataraja inside the sanctum of chidambaram and the nataraja in
    > > > my pooja room are moorthis. The Nataraja in my showcase is an idol
    > > > that does not have any spiritual energies and is there fore a
    > > > showpiece.

    Second Person:
That rule is not applicable to ganesh. The moent a ganesh moorthi is made, it becomes ganesh.

Proof: That is why it is kept in River/Tank bankor under arasamaram without even a pradishtai or ashtabandanam and worshipped.

Further proof: Even if a keep a cowdung and call him a pillayar and he becomes a pillayar. Though the ashtabandana, avahayami and yadasthanam procedures are done for him like other gods, he also has a procedure of non pradishta worship.

The person who wants to do pooja at home need to take a mandrpoadesam from Guru or to worship the hereditory idol from father. The Ganesh Chadurthi is dose not call for it. No Mantropadesam or Pranapradishta required. you can simply take a ganesh idol and worship.

The second person mentioned that ganesh idol cannot be a show piece.

First Person:Again we had another example just today in a regular discussion when someone said a Ganesha idol 'cannot' be an exhibit - that is a belief, not a fact. Ganesha idols are exhibits in museums all over the world.

Second Person: When we say the showitself not allowed then where is the question of museum. The Display of idols at spl time like Navaratri Golu, It has a Kalsah symbolising the prana pradishta, Sundal offerring for pooja and the symbolic sleeping on the last day.

The foriegn museums are places where the idols are lootedfrom a country and kept. There is no religious sanction for a museum. I will correct myself if there is a sanction for it.

The new idols if kept in display w.o pranapradishta, half heartedly we can watch but that is not applicable for pillayar.

Second Person: Trust it is not views but facts. You cannot brush aside this.
This is what the second person wanted to point out that in the discussion. That is why the current day Ganesh Visarjan are opposed by many and people are asking for aproper visarjan.

We are not giving silly sentiments but facts. Now instead of arguing with facts with the second person, what really happens is.

First person: People are sentimental. I will not write.

Third Person. You dont know anything. You have never seen a Ganesh.
3a Person: No mavu and Idiyappam.
3b person: what Pranapradishta ( as if that No2 has used the word). Are you Intellectually superior? Are you great saint to do? Do you want pillayar to worshipped the way you want? Are the people buying Ganesh idols are fools?

Is this a discussion or simple expressing some thing beacuse they donot want to have an alteranate opinion.

    Correctme if i am wrong?

since leaving to Coastal, i will reply to your views tomarrow. If you pin point the mistakes of the second person, he is ready for correcting himself.

    -regards

    sankar

  • Shankar

Sorry havent had any sleep so Iam a bit slow...can you elucidate please!

    btw

Are you nor contradicting yourself in stating that even if you want to worship a moorthi at home you need mandrobadesam yet you ve stated there are numerous temples when illiterate non brahmin poojaris do the poojas to kulatheivam (moorthi) earlier?

    Have a safe trip

    Kind Regards

  • Sri i think he answered himself..

The foriegn museums are places where the idols are looted from a country and kept. There is no religious sanction for a museum. I will correct myself if there is a sanction for it. >>>

EXACTLY!!! The discussion was not on the lines of religious sanction or not, it was on the historical origins of the word 'idol'. Just fyi, idols in museums are not 'looted' they are sold from governemtn to government for cultural artifact display OR some travel from museum to museums for display OR some are made to order from places like Poompuhar.

These idols can be Ganesha or any other god it really does not matter. That is all i was trying to say. And again same point mixing religious sentiments where it is not anything to do with which God has to be worshipped in which way.

    Malathi
  • Ha ha !!!
I was thinking more of the sleeping beauty :-)
  • The idea is to make people forget telengana problem. Iru Kodugal principle.
  • I have never used the word Non Brahmin illitrate. I respect every individual. As usual it isa kothu vangal.

The Poojaris also are intiated into priesthood. They are considered much superior as they represent the God for which they do pooja. ( Sami vandu Irangum. Arul vakku)

There are procedures for the avahanam doneby poojari. Many amman temples follow kumbabishegam procedure also.

Poojaris also underwent training in those days. If i tell more, then will say this is not for this forum.

By the way none of you have replied to me my mail on " Kannagi Koil Kumbabishegam"
    in silappadigaram.

Request you people to do some reasearch on the various questions i asked earlier, which will be helpful to understand certain facts.
  • Dear Sir(s),
I would request you to kindly delink my "individual mail" status to the one - where I can
    "sign in" and participate?
This request is due to a lot of messages getting mixed up with my other business mails
    which need my urgent attention.
    Thank you,
    Sethuraman(intimateSethu)
  • Dear Mr Sethuraman

    You can change that yourself

log into the groups and go into preferences and change it yourself

  • Yet one more reason to have a Discussion Forums rather than have a Yahoo groups :-))))
  • hi all
    My 2 paise....

There are a lot of ppl in this forum (like me) who may not contribute much
towards the discussions here but check all the PSVP mails on regular basis
just to gain something from the forum which pertains to their interest i.e
    History, Ponniyin selvan, Kalki.
Offlate all discussions end in a religius squabble.
we are more interested in Karikalan, Raja Raja chozhan, Mahendra pallavan,
Kandalur Salai, Periya Kovil and the likes rather than St Thomas's murder,
San Thome being kapali temple. I am not saying they are not history. but may
not interest a wide rage of readers here.
For the latter there are enough material in the net and one just needs to
    google it out.
But it is for the former that we yearn to know more.
