> GOKUL, > > IS THIS CORRECT? > Kundavai + Vndthvn Daughter married Rarajaraja ?
No evidence, to the best of my knowledge SPS. Of course you would have known this well before me had it been the case :-)
I actually found something else about this historic vanthiyathevan and his most likely rashtrakuta background. I had problems digesting this background because Krishna III had ravaged chola country and in all possibility even arinjaya might have lost his life only in one such battles (Attrur thunjiya).
The interesting thing is the change in mentality of krishna III as time went by. The famous swami thevar inscription of vellan kumaran from thiruvotriyur (ex general of rajathithya) is issued under his command !
Hi SPS sir and Gokul - traced the original post from agathiar - its prof JB's....

2) Is there any reference to uncle - niece marriage in ancient Tamil literature?
Rajaraja Chola's elder sister was Kundhavai I. She was married to Vallavaraiyan Vandhiya ThEvan. Rajaraja had 15 known wives. One among them was the daughter of Kundhavai and Vandhiya ThEvan. Here we see a historical evidence of the Maternal uncle marrying the niece.
In history, we normally see that royal princes marry girls from certain mini-royal families. They are hereditary sambandhapuram. For instance, Rajaraja's daughter Kundhavai marries Vimaladitya, the Chalukya. Their son Rajaraja Narendra marries Ammanga Devi, the daughter of Rajendra who is the brother of Kundhavai. Their son is Kulothunga Chola. He marries the daughter Madurantaki of Rajendra II who is the brother of AmmangaDevi.
1. Hail! Prosperity! The following copper images, which had been set up in the temple of the lord Sri-Rajarajesvara until the twenty- ninth year (of the king's reign) by Soramahadeviyar, the consort of our lord Sri-Rajarajadeva, were engraved on stone, after they had been measured by the cubit measure (preserved) in the temple of the lord, after the jewels (given to them) had been weighed without the threads, the frames and the copper nails by the stone called (after) Dakshina-Meru-Vitankan, and after the gold had been weighed by the stone called (after) Adavallan
Dear Members Vanavarayan Vanthiathevan is from Bana country ie. from present day area, consisting of Doddabellapur, Kolar, Tumkur and Chittor Districts, This is basically , a Telugu/tamil mixed speaking region. This area was ravaged and occupied during the invasion of Krishna III Rastrakuda in early tenth (c 920 )century. However Kannara Deva a son of Aditya I through a rastrakuda princess (Marata)was refusrd his rightful throne by his father in preference to tamil Prince namely, Parandaka I . So to reserve his position, a war was fought with Chola Kingdom by the Rastrakuda Krishana II but failed disatrously. So Cholas annexed this region to their kingdom then onwards. Once again Banas and Vaithumbas ( later Kalyani, Wife of Arinjaya, vaithumba Princess ) also agitated against Cholas joined their hands with Rastrakuda Krishna III in Thakkolam War (c 949)to take revenge on their early defeat at the hand of Aditya I.
A beautiful Shiva temple still exists in Nandhi Village near Bangalore which is a typical example for Bana Architecture .Later this temple was renovated by the Chola Monarch Rajendra Thevar in c 1020 AD This place is called as Bhoganandheshwara temple.
I definitely agree... Even remembering the names of all 14 would have been a tough task. Imagine what would happen if he mixed the names? Guess, because he was RRC, he would have gotten away with it... :)
Even though Rajendra Chola was born early, RRC had so many wives just to foster good relations with other clans, is it?
when i was searching for the prev thread of RRC marrying kundavai+ VT daughter in agathiyar - chanced on this interesting thread ...again from the great man .. Prof JB
We have the Banas, who originated in Persia. In a few centuries, >they were in Andhra, later with the Pallavas of Kanchi. >They changed their names and became Vaanar, >Vaanaadhiraayar, >Vaana Kovaraiyar etc. They came occupy very high positions >later on. The supreme commander of RajaRaja Chola was >Vaana Kovaraiyan Vandhiyath thevan. Strikes a familiar chord? >Yes, of course. You would have met him in "Ponniyin Selvan". >After the downfall of the Cholas, they joined the >Paandiyas. >In due course they became so powerful, that they >chased away the weaker Paandiyas from Madurai. They later >became absorbed into the Marava community and got assimilated >into that martial class. >This sort of a phenomenon is known as the "Dynastic >Drift". >But this does not mean that all Tamils started off >from the >Sarasvati Basin and migrated towards South India. >Its a comfortable idea, though. The Dravidian migration >from the Indus Valley. Hmmmm..... More conventional. In line >with Western thought. > > >Still reading???!!!! > >Regards, > >Jayabarathi
