chidambaram
  • Dear Sps
the keralite habits in chidambaram could also be inspired by natarajars
    stay in kerala.
when malik kafur invaded tamil nadu in april 1314, legends say nataraja
was spirited away to hill country.( a good idea for a novel like
    thiruvarangkan ula)
after 60 years the dikshitars forgot where it was buried and were led
by a cow which showered milk on the buried idol daily.
there is also one local legend that says the nataraja in lalgudi is the
    true one.
    any comments?

  • Dear swetha

there is a 1000 year old fresco above brigathiiswarar
the 4 raja gopurams of thillai of present is not there.
instead keral type vaasals are there.

can we have a discussion on the people who built the present raja
    gopurams.
(one of them was built by pachchaiyappa muthaliar and his sister)
one trivia" all four are offset and can be seen together from only
one point near the sivaganga tank
  • dear venkatesh,

Konjam try panna all the four gopurams can also be seen from one Point in "Pandianathar Koil" at chidambaram
  • Dear Dhiwaker

we both are talking about the same place.
paandi naayagam is the murugan temple on the west bank of the
    sivagangai
actually there is a pillar to mark the spot
    closer to sivakamasundari temple.
but the point is even when you are serious people think otherwise
when you said the four gopurams can be seen from one place i thought
akaa diwaker is going to say plane or helicopter il irunthu

    ha ha
actually there is a fantastic shot of the four gopurams from a
    helicopter in the movie kaathalan

    i can hear you say
( naan nagmava thaan paarhtheen. nadaraajara illai)
  • adhu dhaan matterey.... naan enna solvennu enakke theriyaadhu.....
    konjam marai kazhanda case naanu.....

but you are right in guessing what i wud have seen in Kadhalan
    movie....

" orumayudan ninadhu thirumalaradi ninaikkinra uthamar than uravu
    vendum( ps group members maadhiri)..
..... maruvu pennaasaiyay naan marakka vendum..unnai naan
    maravaadhirukka vendum.....dharumamigu chennayir
    kandhakottathulvalar thalamongu kandhavele..... "
  • > can we have a discussion on the people who built the present raja
    > gopurams.

    That reminds me

I sent a 1400 page book to SPS just on chidambaram. Thillai and
Nataraja by B Natarajan son of SR Balasubrahmanyam
  • chidambaram was a thillai vanam
thillai is a tree( most possibly the mangrove type we find in
pichavaram)a short tree that grows on water fronts
    now extinct in chidambaram area.

but it is possible that this plant was previously predominant in
chidambaram for the town is a narrow strip between two rivers and
    must have been marshy
  • vygrapathar gets a boon from natarajar at chidambaram
    know what he asks

tiger claws to enable him to climb the slippery vilva tree to pluck
    leaves for prayer

( dhiwaker would have asked for a ladder and some money to start an EOU)

so chidambaram is called puliyur. also places like thiru paathiri
puliyur where vyagrapaathar worshipped are named so
  • Going by history, it could be that Hiranyavarman, one of the earliest
of Pallava kings might have built this temple.
  • Sivamayam

While entering in to the Kovil , feeling HIS friendly enquiry "Entru
Vanthaay?" – ennum thiru kurippE is the special of Chidhambaram. Till
we leave the temple the continuos care given and the flowing eternal
love makes us to forget all. The lifted leg alone occupies the whole
heart and melts us. My sincere prayers to all those who think about the
    Kovil.

    thiruchitrambalam
  • that was a great mail
on the energy of this temple
    thookiya thiruvadi/ kunjithapatham
    on which the earth revolves.
i vaugely remember prof rathnasababathy say something aboutwhich part
of arthanariswarar was lifted( the male or female)

    in saivam koyil means chidambaram

place name is actually thillai.( after the plants)
just today i mailed on the mangrove plant that gave thillai its name.
    its actually called rhizopora
    a co incidence
i saw the plants being reared in pots in ms swaminathan foundation today

people can see this in pichavaram, also on the river banks when we cross
    cuddalore and pondy
  • lucky me
with all these mails on nataraja i am visiting his temple tomorrow

  • It is difficult to explain the great importance given to chidambaram by
    saivites and srirangam by vaishnavites

Many theories - but still lot of questions.

  • Do think of me when you eat sakkarai pongal!
  • dear SPS
news that rajendran stayed in chidambaram for 4 year
    what a co incidence
i too stayed there for 4 years- my teachers loved me and tried to
    keep me for more(with arrears)but i escaped

    actually i stayed in thiruvetkalam
a paadal petra sthalam 3 km from chidambaram.( annamalai nagar)
on quiet nights you could hear the sea from there

here was the location where arjuna on the vana vasa battled with the
lord himself and got the paasupatham as a reward

traditionaly this temple is beleived to provide a pardon for all
errors in life including those against god

    it better be true
for on the out skirts of this temple naan adichcha looty konjamaa
    nanjamaa?
  • Dear Venkat,

You are the BEST PERSON to project that psychological bonding..
since you hail from Nagarathar community and wellconnected with the
    Trustees of Thiruvengadu.

Thiruvengadu is about 11 Kms west of Poompuhar @ Kaviripuhum-
pattinam, Capital Town of Early Chozhas - atleast till Karikalan
period - which was perished by Kadalkoll @ Tsunami., which
affected the phyche of Nagarathar community, who migrated to the
elevated piece of Nadu - bordering with Pandyas and Chozhas and not
far away from Chera's Karur too... I will leave it at this.

Thiruvengadu @ SWETHARANYAM - which includes Thirunangur -
comprises of minimum 12 Divya Desams and 12 Siva temples in about 4
x 4 Kms stretch.. where Thirumangai Mannan @ Azhwar's Thiruvali, his
wife's Thiruvellakkulam too figures. Hardly 7 Kms east of this place
is Seerkazhi, birth place of Thirugnana Sambandar.

You have connections with heriditary Trusteess of Thiruvengadu siva
temple. This temple having 3 moorthys, 3 ambals, 3 theerthams is
also known as Aadhi Chidambaram, possibly with first Nataraja
worshipped during Early Chozha empire .. ! All the Medivial Chozha
Kings have given extensive grants and the ANIRUDHAR BRONZE found
from this Temple is in display at Thanjai Art Gallery ! The
Pidchadanar Bronze - Thiruvengadu / Thanjai Art Gallery - when seen
from the back - reveals the locks of hair of Lord siva are nothing
    but snakes !!

Fearing the effect of Tsunami, Medival Chozhas should have promoted
Chidambaram in a big way ...

With Veeranam hardly about 20 Kms farther West, with Veeranam on the
West, Chidambaram - Thiruvengadu - Poompuhar on the East,
Pullirukkuvelur @ Vaitheeswarankoil on the south and Sethiathope /
Thirumunaippadi (recall Villi's discussions / Archerymen who got
settled in these area) on the North this should have been the cream
of Chozha Kingdom, before it became an Empire.

So, the UDAYARKUDI, on the Northern banks of Veeranam should have
    been an aristocratic settlement !!

Parantka I paved way for this ...

And rightly Kalki has chosen this as his Magnum opus's commencing
    point.

    best regards / sps
  • sps,

The question was 'did anyone examined?' to know if someone has already done
that checking of facts and providing summary. Your answer 'no one
prevents...' sounds like no one has done that in this group. Thanks for that
cordial answer. I do not want to pose an expert; as a lay man I will try to
read those inscriptions. Can you please give me if I can read them somewhere
    on the internet?

I have not read all the links you have sent. I will read them one by one.

    Regards.
