    I read Ponniyin selvan 40 years back. That time my age group had a
    special 'kick' for Vanathi. Kundavai and Nandini were too power
    oriented while Poonkuzhali was 'different', an 'elanthaippayam'
    case :)

    Can sombody say how many times Vanathi swoons in the Canon?

    Welcome to the group Mr. Srinivas,
    When I first read PS, I was one big Vanathi-hater. I always wanted AruLmozhi to marry Poongahali. I even used to say, "I wish AruLmozhi dint rescue Vanathi when she was falling into the river(or falls whatever)"...I think the chapter name is "Nandi Valarnthathu".
    By naming poongazhali as "ilanthapazham kind", you are asking for trouble(just kidding). may be you could say "Vijayshanthi" kind(Rather Vijayshanthi cud be named Poongazhali kind;-)...)

    Vanathi swoons let me think...

    1.When arunmozhi goes to battle.

    2 Vandhiyadevan meets kundavai in palayarai.

    3.Kudanthai jothidar (times two)

    5.in Thanjavur when she sees nandhini upsetting sundaracholar masquerading as mandhakini.

    6.In the trunk of the elephant.

    7.In Nagaipattinam when she falls into the canal chases by an angry bull.(though she fakes it this time.

    8.when she hears Arunmozhi is dead.(seeing his Bimbam in the water)

    So I guess it is eight times....I may be wrong.
