To my knowledge, atleast till the year 1940 people preferred to have important documents recorded on "olaichuvadis" than "paper" despite the fact that by this period, paper had come in already and was liberally in use. I come to this conclusion, because the horoscopes for myself as well as other younger children born to my parents are recorded in "olai chuvadi's - sort of engraved in tamil of that time, which is not difficult to understand, and all letters are curved rather than straight lines - may be because a straight line would pierce through the palm leaves. Or may be because, the astrologer who wrote them belonged to Kandanur in Ramnad district (despite his hailing from Kerala) where palm leaves were in abundance. This is just for information of those interested in "olai chuvadis". May be there are more families treasuring their family records through olai chuvadis even this day. I wont also be surprised if these families had some connexion, or some period of residenc in the coastal districts of Tamilnadu, where palm fronds were abundant. Regards to all Sundaram.
