To add to the conversation on expressive bronzes and statues -- take a look at the following from NY Metropolitan Museum which I visited many many years ago.
I recall my strong impression of seeing Karaikal Ammaiyar. Her beautiful facial impression can be seen if you use the zoom tool; it brings her alive and is awesome. Drooping breasts are artistically rendered, with rather elongated earlobes due to heavy ear rings.
Another one that impressed me was the expression on Thirugnanasambandar. Expressive face combined with curly hair makes his looks alive! I recall standing in front of him for quite sometime, until my wife tugged at my elbow.
