Visit to Pallavaram Kudaivarai
  • Hi Friends,

In Pallavaram, there is a kudaivarai belongs to the period of
    Mahendravarman.

Last sunday i visited there. My new house is on the way to this
kudaivarai. But i got disappointed. Now it is occupied by Muslims
and the kudaivarai is converted into a mosque.

7 or 8 years ago Dr.Kalaikkovan and Dr.Nalini tried to read and
record the inscriptions. But they were not allowed to read and the
people around there created some problems. So, nobody knows what is
there in those inscriptions. In future also, nobody can know what is
there. Because, everything is covered with tiles. The floor, ceiling
and walls of karuvarai and muga mandapam, pillars of muga mandapam
and everything is covered. All the parts of temple architecture like
adhishtaanam, kambu, pattigai, kumudham, valabi and vaajanam are not
visble now. The only part through which this can be identified as a
kudaivarai of mahendra is the podhikai. Podhikai is nothing but a
part which joins pillar and ceiling. The shape of podhikai is like
an arc. Tharanga podhikai will have waves in that arc. So, they
    couldn't cover it with tiles.

When i told this to Dr.Kalaikkovan, he commented that 'Tharanga
    podhikaiyai edhukkaaga amaichaangannu ippodhaan puriyudhu'.

I don't know why ASI didn't acquire this monument.
  • Hi kamal,

Yes, it is a pity. ASI might not have acquired it because it might
become a communal problem and there are always forces waiting for
such things to happen - you can understand.
By the way - are there any sculptures you could see ??
