Dear Venketesh, I just finished 'The Kindly Ones' [Les Bienveillantes] Prix Goncourt, Paris, 2006. . . . not for the faint of heart. . . 983 pages, written originally in French by Jonathan Littell. I read it in English . . . about an SS officer, told through his eyes, reminiscing about the years from his youth, through the years of the Third Reich, to Hitler's suicide in May 1945. He becomes more & more hardened to the atrocities he commits as time goes on. The book is as terrible as was the NAZI regime.
Title is the actual definition of the word in Greek "Erinyes" -- Clearly a euphemism. usually translated as the 'Furies' = their Latin name, says WIKI.
Perhaps it's similar to the way Indian deities are called 'not terrifying' --e.g. AGHORA -- when they so obviously are. It was so good I didn't want it to end. But it's very very dark. As one review says: 'a sensitive & explosive topic."
Kathie B. ps that's neat that your family is mentioned!
