upbringing of ps charecters
  • Hi all
there was this story about 2 possible questions in a tamil essay exam
milch cow or coconut tree. the lazy student studied only the about the cow, but as fortune would have it the examiners deemed fit to ignore the bovine species.
the boy wrote about the cow. the cow has 4 legs and a tail. it gives milk. it is milked by a milk man etc and finally ... such a cow was tied to the coconut tree.

like wise i am trying to link pS with this rather excellent discussion on child up bringing.
we all seem to accept one element. adults behave as they were taught to in their child hood. they succeed or fail in life based on the upbringing.

what do you think about the up bringing of ps charecters.
kundavi amv and aditya could not have been more different from each other

    also pungkuzhali and nandini.
vanathi seems an orphan, and so does vanthiyathevan.
    what about maran?

how were they brought up in child hood. does kalki talk about it, give pointers or can we read between the lines?

  • hi venkat: One more 'kuttu' and 'pirambadi'; have to read PS again.

its just that you can note something new everytime you read PS

poonkuzhali i guess grew up without a mother. a father who was too busy lighting the light house.
a dumb brother and an aggressive sis in law

she makes up kolivaai pisasukal and other imginary stuff. very much like calvin who makes up hobbes

vanathi's fainting fits can be attributed to having lost a father in painful circumstances

i think kundavi grew up in an aggressive manner, perhaps thought she was better off than her brothers. would have made a better living if born today with better career prospects

nandini. orphaned. not knowing her parentage. growing like a poor cousin with the chola children.

  • Venkat, i love the Calvin Hobbes comparison to Poonguzhali!

Re: Vanathi Kalki does elaborate a little on her background, motherless girl, very sensitive, given to fainting fits, her whole life is around finding the ideal husband and bearing a kid, very typical believable story.

Kundavi, yes probably very intelligent first born who bossed her brothers - so AK turned out the rebel and AMV the docile guy who suppresess all his feelings (kalki's AMV that is). In all very believable that also.

How about Pazhaya Madurantakan - ambitions suppressed by Sembian Madhevi's pressure to be religious? or even Manimekalai - who idolises her brother and therefore his friend VD and has a huge crush on him since childhood? Or even Periya Pazhu..who grew up early and spent all his life in wars so develops this crush on a much younger woman later in life? All very believable situations...

  • Hi venkat

What about amv : brought up by a dominating sis, overshadowed by a all
conquering aggressive brother, mom devoted to serving a bed ridden
father, aunt who was always temple hopping ! Not brought up to be
king, so maybe given more time for liberal education. ( R there any
ref to battles of amv before 985 ad / )

Vt : hail fm a once prosperous clan, now in penury, forced to serve
chola army ( !!), be ak's kaithadi aspiring hopes of some return
favors, fm his ways, he isn't too polished at the start nor a smooth
operator, so guess not much academic learning, more training in
    martial arts.

Kandamaran; must have been a darling, brought up as dad's best chance
ok maybe second chance, first chance was manimekalai !!

Parthibendran: can we say, same as vt 's stand, but with visible
symbols that would remind him and shame him everytime he saw them, the
pallava caves, monoliths n temples !!

Ravidasan: ha, this I should leave you to imagine. He is afterall ur
    unofficial (anti) hero

the more you think of it there are many similarities
making up a best friend making up lovers
the best friend or lover is a fearsome thing. a tiger or ghosts.

perhaps the two thought they were not encouraged enough by their parents.
even last week calvin's father refused help in patenting a robot he designed with a salmon tin can.

  • Vanathi's swooning fits started only after she she was in the 'arti
gang' to see off AMV; because she had earlier offered him a job when he
saved the bird-hatchlings from a cat. Seeing him as the prince shocked
her immensely, she swooned and perhaps was cured by getting another
shock from Aniruddar later in the novel.

A colleague of mine, took delivery of a Bajaj scooter after a long wait,
had a minor accident while driving out. Even though he suffered only
minor cuts and lacerations, he was so rattled that he gave up two
    wheelers for ever.

  • Actually while introducing her Kalki does say she is prone to long deep silences and am not sure if he mentions swoonign also there. Must look it up. But he does say ahead that she has some issues with handling emotions which is one reason Kundavi takes her under her wing, to make her stronger.
  • Kundavai + vanathi, was a profitable alliance for both.

Kundvai needed amv in her control. Ak was already out. She needed
someone docile enough to be her kaithadi and fix her up with amv, so
that he is always within her grasp. The entire thing of taking her to
kudanthai jyothidar, was to see if she was the right choice !!

Vanathi, hmm, it was ploy to send her to chola palace , a ruse to get
    her married into the clan.
