  • Priya, how beautiful, thank you!!
  • Thank you Priya!
  • I'm a little sceptical of that Macauley quote because
'caliber' is spelled in the American way, not the Brit way.
'calibre' But anyway, what a jerk. The British Empire
knew what it would take to make everyone else kowtow, didn't they!

  • My observation is - all those who take temporary residence (students,
professional assignments, job contracts etc.) in US and those who stay
for longer periods, talk with American accent; and the accent is picked
up very fast, in less than a year. Even the British who visit US for a
reasonable period, return with strong US accents. Indians settled in UK
, in general, still retain Indian accent.

Americans who come to UK do not switch to local accent.

    This is my personal experience.

On the lighter side, perhaps Macauley had the American interests in
mind, and anticipated the sojourn to US by Indians.

  • I have met Indians with UK accent also. I have lived here 20 years myself and don't have any strong american accent when I go home. I have learnt to speak in US slowly and clearly first, use words that people understand instead of words we are used to as Indians, the accent comes only after that (meaning there is often times no need to  don an accent if you can speak legibly using vocabulary people understand).

I have a few non indian UK friends. The general understanding of India and Indian culture is somewhat more sentimental and deeper to them than Americans. Perhaps because most of them had grandparents or ancestors who lived in colonial India.
  • I am not sure, but I too have read somewhere that this could be a
    hoax. No one knows.

But we should admit that the British form of education has equal bads
as it has its goods. best example is our history. And nowhere in
Indian text books its taught that all the mathematics and some of
scientific discoveries were recorded by Indians long before the
Europeans started to think about civilization.
