--- s i m watching it every week. and this week monday it was a pleasant shock. have only this PK in a movie form which can give a true form our imaginations. I heared that some people like MGR ,kamal have tried to make PS.I wonder y no body has taken steps for makinga movie on SS.May be because of the tragedic end.any information about this.
War scene depictions ( not present day - olden style)
the best were
- Troy ( the beach landing scene is one of the best coreograhed fight scenes) - lord of the rings - special effects and the sheer scale of the sets - Mel gibson ( braveheart, patriot) - the intensity and brutality of conflict - Galdiator - specatcular sets and dialogue - spartacus - sets again - 300 spartans ( not the current 300, but the 1960 version)- human grit
would say the worst movie taken - how a director can do gross injustice to a character is alexander

Completely agree with the list, though I would rate Gladiator at the top.
I just read Parthiban Kanavu, and also saw this program on podhigai... and was pleasantly surprised that the movie was made dialogue by dialogue... no script writer would have been necessary.....
Ofcourse sir, Benhur and what a pair it is with ten commandments - that too in those days - without computers / tech . the sheer size and grandeur of these projects makes you wonder how they did it. the characters live to this day - chalton heston, Yul Brynner...the dialogues still sound in your ears...
the city he builds shall bear my name and the women he loves shall bear my child....so shall it be said and so shall it be written...

--- S evryone has to agree that. its scene by scene and dialogue by diologue just ditto of PK of kalki. No need of art director and diologue writer . But on the names i saw they were persons for both these things . i dont know what they have done on their work.
I vaguely remember a change in the story. In the war before Vikraman being deported, in the book there will be only 5 guys turning up in the Vikraman's side and he ends up looking like a fool. But in the movie, there would a 1 lakh chola soldiers fighting againt 2 lakh pallava soldiers and he will talk lengthy dialouges.
Yes, one of them was valli grandfather who valiantly fights and ultimately dies. vikraman is betrayed by his uncle marappa boopathy into believing he will have a large force to fight the pallava army. he is captured and taken in chains on horseback to kanchi - which is how kundavi sees him...
Kalki shows these to highlight the naive/immaturity of the young vikraman to compare against the battlehardened wisdom of mamallar. however, i still feel kalki failed to elevate vikraman, even after his triumpant return from shenbaga theevu - still caught in glorifying sivanadiyar / mamallar .... overall PK shades in comparison to ss and ps.

After all PK was his first historical novel. May be just like most of the writers he was just checking the pulse of the reader to do a monumental works like SS and PS.
i still feel he had written or atleast conceptualised most of SS while writing pk. the references to ayanar, sivagami, (mamallar changing the subject when his daugther talks of them..), ayanar's house, ayanar's sister...and of course naganandhi ( with prev animosity) - one handed etc are clear giveaways..
there is quite some evidence to beleive that kalki had finished parthiban kanavu when in the employment of vasan. but chose to hold on to the stroy till he started his own mag.
like assistant directors offering their second best story to the director.
As per my info the movie was a few years in the making and was released only in 1960 and by then Sarojadevi had become a big star. Gemini Ganesan and Vyjayantimala appear quite young too.

saroja devi seems to have acted in major films before parthiban kanavu in 1960

I agree all these movies with Sarojadevi as heroine pre-dated Parthiban Kanavu's release but my contention is that the latter must have been on the starting blocks when she was a small-time actress. Remember Waheeda Rehman who became a top star in Hindi movies after starring as a dancer in some Telegu movies as she hailed from Hyderabad.
