Importance of Agamas in Temple building
  • The subject should actually be the title of a book.
Agamas can be called as grammer for temple building. For each type of
temple, moorthy and sthalam (place) there are many things to be
considered...the dimentions, the directions, the overall structure -
all have been thought of and brought under specific guidelines.
There were engineering as well as metaphysical reasons behind all
this. I am still a novice in the subject - but I have read something
about these things from learned scholars like Ganapathi Stapathi. It
is very deep subject in itself.
For example, the nataraja image we commonly see, is itself a subject
of deep study and the dimentions, posture, expressions - all have
very deep significance and meaning. The entire Nataraja image will
come under a chakra of some kind and I have seen this picture.

Ofcourse, Raajarajeswaram (Big temple) has been haunted by some
foolish rumours in the recent past - but this has nothing to do with
the original grammer in which the temple was built.

Dr.Nagasamy's concerns are very serious - both from the Monument
    perspective and religious perspective.

Those who are interested, pl read "The Power in Temples" by one
Sridharan or sridhar. This is not a book on "magical powers of
temples" but a scientific approach to why certain things were built
in certain way. It will be interesting to analyze some of the ancient
Mayan structures and Egyptian structures in this light.

Remember - Raajarajeswaram has adopted a Pyramidal vimana structure!
This is unlike all other early chola temples and is quite unique in
    nature...
Have any of you read about the Power of pyramidal structures ??
