Gajapati rulers of Orissa
  • Question to Kalinga Bala:

    Hi Bala,

I read a news item on yahoo that the current queen of Gajapati dynasty visited the Puri temple. I am just curious to know the lineage and how the Gajapati kings survived the Muslim/mughal onslaught and have been able to stay in Orissa for the last 500 years. Before the mughals, I read that Krishna deva raya had a war with the Kalinga Gajapati Kings, but somehow our history books have been made sure that the Gajapatis are not mentioned anywhere.

When did this dynasty start ruling over Kalinga, is after the Telugu choda gangas, or after the Kalingathu parani?
  • Though Bala would be able to answer better these details I got from
    wikipedia

The Moguls conquered Bengal and Orissa in 1576; however, Orissa was
subsequently ceded to the Marathas in 1751.
In 1803, the British under the British East India Company occupied
Orissa after the Second Anglo-Maratha War. In 1823, Orissa was
divided into the three districts of Cuttack, Balasore and Puri, and a
number of native tributary states. Orissa was administered as part of
    the Bengal Presidency.
